One
of the most ambitious applications of array technology is to mimic the human olfactory
system - the 'artificial nose'. A number of manufacturers claim to be 'nose companies'.
A true electronic nose must be able to map the response of sensors to the
subjectivity of the human olfactory system; this challenging task is beyond the capability
of current vapour profiling systems. In certain instances, especially sample/standard
matching, chemical profiling is able to provide useful indirect information on aromas.
