An Electronic Nose?

WB01161_.GIF (942 bytes)One of the most ambitious applications of array technology is to mimic the human olfactory system - the 'artificial nose'. A number of manufacturers claim to be 'nose companies'.   A true electronic nose must be able to map the response of sensors to the subjectivity of the human olfactory system; this challenging task is beyond the capability of current vapour profiling systems. In certain instances, especially sample/standard matching, chemical profiling is able to provide useful indirect information on aromas.

The QTS-1 system is able to distinguish real and fake perfumes based on chemical differences, the consistency of detergents or deodorants and similar odour related problems. Although Quartz Technology would never claim that QTS-1 is an 'electronic nose' it is capable of diagnosing many aroma problems based on differing chemical fingerprints
